One such case involves 14-year-old Amelia whose parents, including her mother Kayley, claim her school's disciplinary measures resulted in her falling ill due to the restriction of water intake. Hundreds of parents have rallied against the Athena Learning Trust's methods, which have reportedly left many pupils and teachers feeling oppressed.

The trust, overseeing six secondary schools in Devon and Cornwall, announced its intention to disband and transfer its schools to other trusts last month, attributing the decision to careful consideration of feedback and recognition of the need for change. Panorama's investigation has gathered accounts from nearly 100 pupils, parents, and former teachers, highlighting the perceived harshness of the school environment.

Many express feeling constantly anxious about breaking rules, with some even going so far as to stop drinking water to avoid needing the toilet. The Athena Learning Trust, a multi-academy trust with a network of schools, claims to support children in remaining in education and provide access to toilets during lessons, while emphasizing the benefits of high expectations and discipline.

However, critics argue that these punitive practices can be harmful, with some teachers describing the environment as a "dictatorship" and pupils feeling demoralized. Despite positive Ofsted reports, concerns persist about the potential damage of excessive discipline on children's well-being.
