Health department urges public to remain vigilant against infectious diseases

The district Health department has warned the public to remain vigilant and take extra precautions against infectious diseases due to recent heavy rain and waterlogging in several low-lying areas. Dr. R. Shahirsha, District Medical Officer, explained that pathogens causing leptospirosis can proliferate in contaminated soil, mud, and stagnant water, entering the body through open wounds and potentially becoming fatal.

Those who come into contact with such environments or engage in relief or clean-up activities are advised to wear protective gear and take prescribed medication like Doxycycline. The department offers preventive medication at government health centers and hospitals.

To prevent waterborne diseases like diarrhoea, jaundice, and typhoid, people are urged to practice good personal hygiene, be cautious with food and water consumption, and follow the Health department's instructions, including chlorination of well water. Drinking only boiled and cooled water is recommended for those in relief camps.

Immediate medical attention should be sought upon experiencing fever, as it could be a symptom of various diseases, including leptospirosis, dengue, jaundice, or influenza. The department also cautions against snakebites and encourages seeking proper medical treatment if bitten.
