Hard-right Reform UK proposes navy-led operation to stop small migrant boats

Reform UK has unveiled a plan to utilize the Royal Navy in an operation dubbed "Operation Fortress" to intercept and return small boats carrying migrants crossing the English Channel. This strategy, which party spokesperson Zia Yusuf claims would be a "humanitarian mission," aims to create the largest military operation in the Channel since World War Two.

Despite concerns regarding French consent, Yusuf asserts that the UK can proceed due to existing international laws. However, Energy Secretary Miatta Fahnbulleh cautions that this approach may lead to diplomatic disputes with France. Reform UK's proposal comes amid a significant decrease in small boat crossings, down around 43% compared to the same period in 2025, with over 2,000 migrants arriving in the UK via this method since Prime Minister Andy Burnham assumed office.

Critics argue that naval vessels are not the most appropriate resources for this task, suggesting the use of ferries instead. The Conservative party has offered an alternative solution, suggesting the abandonment of the European Convention on Human Rights to facilitate the deportation of illegal immigrants.
