'Had no time to flee': Drone strikes Russian beach; kills 7, injures 40

A drone attack on a beach in Arkhipo-Osipovka, near Russia's Black Sea resort town of Gelendzhik, resulted in seven deaths and 40 injuries on Sunday, according to local authorities. Among the casualties were three children. The beach, a popular summer destination, reportedly had many people present at the time of the incident, as indicated by footage verified by the BBC.

Witnesses reported hearing what sounded like machine-gun fire before the explosion, with some describing the attack as occurring in front of their children. Russia's Krasnodar Krai governor Veniamin Kondratyev blamed Ukraine for the attack, though Ukrainian authorities have neither commented nor claimed responsibility. The circumstances surrounding the strike remain unclear, though some analysts suggest Russian air-defence forces may have attempted to intercept the drone prior to its impact.

It is also possible that electronic interference played a role. While it cannot be entirely ruled out that the beach was targeted deliberately, Ukraine's lack of prior such actions and the presence of potential military targets in the area are factors to consider. The beach strike occurred near another popular resort site, "Putin's Palace," which was under investigation by Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny's Anti-Corruption Foundation.

The incident prompted a sharp response from Moscow, with the Russian Foreign Ministry accusing Western countries of sponsoring terrorist activity, particularly NATO and the European Union.
