Government launches National Community Media Cyber Capability Building Project to combat cybercrime

The Ghanaian government inaugurated the National Community Media Cyber Capability Building Project (NCMCCBP) on August 3 at the NCA Tower in Accra, with the aim of equipping community journalists with essential skills to combat cybercrime and promote digital safety nationwide. The project, led by the Africa Centre for Digital Transformation (ACDT) in collaboration with the Cyber Security Authority (CSA) and supported by the Czech Republic's Embassy, emphasizes the importance of community media in fostering digital safety, particularly in rural and underserved areas where local radio stations and media outlets serve as trusted information sources.

Deputy Minister Mohammed Adams Sukparu highlighted that cybersecurity is crucial for Ghana's digital transformation, as it underpins innovation, digital inclusion, and confidence in the digital economy. He emphasized that informed citizens serve as the strongest defense against cyber threats and that community media plays a vital role in disseminating cybersecurity awareness and best practices.

The project will train journalists to educate the public on cybersecurity best practices, including digital hygiene, online safety, fraud prevention, and responsible online behavior. Participants will cover topics such as cybersecurity reporting, cybercrime trends, digital rights, ethical journalism, and fact-checking. Upon completion, journalists will join the Cyber Security Press Corps, a national network committed to promoting cybersecurity awareness through responsible reporting.

The initiative aligns with the government's broader digital transformation plans, such as the One Million Coders program, the national Artificial Intelligence strategy, and the Ghana Digital Acceleration Project. Sukparu emphasized that cybersecurity is integral to all aspects of Ghana's digital future, underscoring the significance of community media in achieving national cyber resilience.
