Google Clock 9.0 adds stopwatch and timer Live Updates

Google has released version 9.0 of its Clock app for Android, introducing significant updates to the stopwatch and timer features. These enhancements include support for Live Update notifications on Pixel devices, which require Android 16 or later. Unlike previous notifications, these Live Updates are displayed as pill-shaped containers with solid backgrounds in the status bar. A real-time count is shown next to the timer or stopwatch icon, but this may prevent other notification icons from appearing alongside it.

To access the new features, users can tap the pill-shaped notification, which will display a five-second overview of the timer or stopwatch on top of their screen. The count is now much larger and easier to read, with prominent Pause/Lap and Pause/Add 1 min buttons. These Live Updates always appear as the first item in the notification shade, lock screen, and always-on display.

Users who prefer the older method can still access it by going to the App info page for Google Clock and navigating to Notifications > App settings > Live updates.

Although version 9.0 of Google Clock was rolled out widely in late July, the stopwatch and timer Live Updates are part of a separate server-side rollout. As of the latest update, these features are widely available on Pixel devices, with users advised to restart their device if the update has not yet taken effect.
