First FIFA member association to pull support from Gianni Infantino’s Presidency revealed

FIFA President Gianni Infantino finds himself in a precarious position ahead of the 2027 FIFA Elections, as member nations begin withdrawing their support. Infantino's controversial decision to privatize a 20% stake in the World Cup's logistics has been widely condemned as a move that undermines the sport's integrity. Following the continental confederations' efforts to halt Infantino's proposed Financial Fair Play (FFP) plan, individual member states are now targeting new leadership for FIFA.

The Wales Football Association (FAW) has officially withdrawn its support from Infantino's re-election bid for the 2027 FIFA Presidency. In a statement released to Sky News, the FAW criticized Infantino's poor governance, processes, leadership, values, stakeholder management, communications, and decision-making, stating that they no longer have confidence in him to lead the sport. "Failing to put the best interests of football first is a failure we cannot accept," the statement concludes.

With UEFA contemplating a vote of no confidence against Infantino, there is a possibility that he may be removed from power before the election. However, rather than risking losing Infantino's voter base in Africa and Asia, member associations are instead focusing on ensuring that he cannot continue as FIFA President for the next four years or be removed sooner.

It is possible that additional European nations may release individual statements, potentially triggering a chain reaction from other supportive nations in CONCACAF and AFC, who have also publicly condemned Infantino's FFE plan. Nonetheless, none of these nations have gone as far as publicly declaring their decision to no longer support Infantino as FIFA President.
