Fire at Wa Islamic SHS displaces 138 students, damages 6 dormitories

A fire erupted at the girls' dormitory of Wa Islamic Senior High School in Ghana's Upper West Region, displacing 138 students and damaging six dormitories. The blaze was initially confined to one room in the girls' dormitory but rapidly spread to six rooms. The fire was reported at 7:30 pm, leaving the students with minimal possessions.

Two fire tenders from the Ghana National Fire Service were swiftly deployed to combat the inferno, which was eventually brought under control. The Headmaster, Alhassan Abudu Bafaara, recounted the harrowing sight of the rapidly escalating fire, claiming that almost everything in the affected six rooms was lost. Despite the fire being extinguished, initial assessments suggest that the full extent of the damage to student belongings remains unclear.

The fire's origin is still under investigation, with the Fire Commander indicating possible causes such as electrical faults, power fluctuations, or the unauthorized use of electrical gadgets. The Municipal Chief Executive, Nura Issah Danwnaa, announced immediate plans to convert classrooms into temporary accommodations for the displaced students, while also urging for the prompt completion of an uncompleted dormitory block to provide further shelter.
