China: Alibaba presents new AI model with top performance

The intense competition for the most advanced artificial intelligence (AI) models between China and the United States continues to escalate. On Monday, the Chinese tech giant Alibaba unveiled the latest version of its leading AI model, Qwen3.8-Max. According to company statements, this new model is expected to compete with leading AI offerings such as Anthropic's Fable 5.

Furthermore, Alibaba claims that in certain aspects, Qwen3.8-Max outperforms its own Qini K3 model, which generated a lot of buzz upon its recent release.

Alibaba has long been one of China's top AI companies. The Hangzhou-based tech company's Qwen models frequently rank in the top tier in performance comparisons. Just two weeks ago, Alibaba had provided a preview of the new model with 2.4 trillion parameters. Next week, the company plans to release the so-called model weights, which essentially are the settings within the AI model that determine how it processes user inputs and generates responses.

To make its models accessible, Alibaba, like many other Chinese AI firms, is making its Qwen3.8-Max model freely available. Users can download, run the model locally, and tailor it to their specific needs. In contrast, leading US AI companies such as Anthropic and OpenAI are using proprietary, closed models. The release is expected to fuel the debate over restricting access of US companies to Chinese AI models.
