Boxing officials urge NSA and Ghana Sports Fund to invest in grassroots athlete development

Boxing authorities have urged the National Sports Authority (NSA) and the Ghana Sports Fund to significantly boost funding for grassroots sports development in Ghana. They maintain that the country's future triumphs in international sporting competitions hinge on bolstering the cultivation of young talent right from the outset. This plea came during a dialogue with the NSA's Director-General, Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, and the Ghana Sports Fund's Administrator, Dr David Kofi Wuaku, on the sidelines of the Commonwealth Games.

The boxing officials underscored the necessity of a meticulously designed athlete development framework, which would spot and foster potential among school students, junior athletes, and eventually, elite competitors. In their view, this approach would ensure Ghana consistently possesses a robust roster of athletes prepared to compete at major international events, rather than scrambling for last-minute preparations.

Their proposal includes the scheduling of regular school and youth tournaments to expose budding athletes to competitive sports and provide pathways to discover and cultivate future champions.

The officials argue that investing in grassroots sports consistently would enhance Ghana’s chances of securing medals at future Commonwealth Games, Olympic Games, and other global sporting events. They also implored the Ghana Sports Fund to keep prioritizing athlete development, youth programs, and high-performance training, describing the Fund as a crucial ally in reshaping Ghana's sports panorama.

This meeting was part of a series of interactions between Dr Wuaku and Team Ghana athletes and representatives at the Commonwealth Games, where talks revolved around athlete welfare, sports funding, and long-term strategies to elevate Ghana's performance on the world stage.
