Bankipur bypoll: BJP chief vows introspection after Kishor ends party's 30-yr hold

The BJP national president, Nitin Nabin, has vowed to conduct a comprehensive self-examination following the loss in the Bankipur Assembly bypoll in Bihar, a result that ended the party's three-decade dominance in the constituency. Jan Suraaj founder Prashant Kishor emerged victorious, garnering 19,324 more votes than BJP candidate Neeraj Kumar, who polled 44,827 votes.

This marks Kishor's first electoral win since founding the Jan Suraaj Party and just over a year after the BJP's failure to secure any seats in the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections.

Nitin Nabin accepted the verdict, expressing gratitude to the people of Manjalpur assembly constituency in Gujarat for their support. He also extended congratulations to the dedicated workers and office-bearers of the BJP. However, in Bapni Pur and Datia, the BJP did not receive the anticipated mandate. Nabin emphasized that the party would undertake a thorough introspection of the election results in these areas, vowing to continue working tirelessly to strengthen people's trust.

Bankipur, a historically strong urban bastion for the BJP since 1995, was represented by Nitin Nabin's father, Navin Kishore Prasad Sinha, for five consecutive terms before the seat was vacated when Nitin Nabin joined the Rajya Sabha. In the 2025 Bihar Assembly election, Nabin retained the seat by more than 50,000 votes, making Kishor's victory one of the most significant political upsets in the state ahead of the Assembly elections.

This bypoll also marked Prashant Kishor's electoral debut, as he launched the Jan Suraaj Party with a focus on education, employment, and governance reforms. Kishor's victory sends a message to the BJP's central leadership, urging them to appoint a competent individual as the Chief Minister of Bihar.

Following the result, the Jan Suraaj Party expressed that the fortress belongs only to the people, thanking Bankipur for their victory. Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary also congratulated Kishor on his win, respecting the people's decision in the grand festival of democracy. The Bankipur bypoll recorded a voter turnout of 34.24 percent.
