Avila Chevalier plans to join Congressional Black Caucus

Darializa Avila Chevalier, the democratic socialist who recently defeated New York Rep. Adriano Espaillat in a primary victory, intends to apply for membership in both the Congressional Black Caucus and the Congressional Hispanic Caucus after being sworn into office, according to her campaign. This would mark a first in political history, as Avila Chevalier would be the second Afro-Latino lawmaker to simultaneously hold positions within both caucuses; Espaillat, however, was prevented from joining the Black Caucus.

Her team reports that she has already engaged in discussions with several Black Caucus members, including House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, following her recent win. Avila Chevalier expressed her excitement about joining the caucus and supporting its collective goals. Chair of the Congressional Black Caucus, Rep. Yvette Clarke, D-N.Y., stated that in the upcoming Congress, “established processes” will be utilized to determine eligibility for membership.

Meanwhile, a representative for the Hispanic Caucus, previously chaired by Espaillat, confirmed that all incoming Latino members are eligible to join once they take their oath of office. Avila Chevalier’s team further confirmed that they have also spoken with multiple CHC members, indicating their intention to join the caucus as well.
