Aung San Suu Kyi appears healthy in first confirmed outside contact for 2.5 years

Burmese political figure Aung San Suu Kyi, currently under house arrest, has made her first confirmed contact with the outside world in over two and a half years. She engaged in a meeting with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), a delegation led by Arnaud de Baecque, in photographs released by the military regime.

Suu Kyi appeared to be in good health during this encounter. This meeting marks a significant development, given the repeated assurances given by the military that the 81-year-old democracy advocate is alive and well, yet no concrete evidence had been presented. Since her arrest in 2021, following a military coup that ousted her government, there has been a lack of credible proof of Suu Kyi's survival.

Kim Aris, her son, has been leading an international campaign to secure evidence of his mother's life. The recent ICRC visit and the accompanying photographs have been welcomed by Kim Aris, who believes the images are genuine and indicate that his mother is in good health. Despite the military's ongoing attempts to reduce its diplomatic isolation through official visits to neighboring nations, they continue to reject numerous demands, including ending aerial attacks on opposition areas, initiating negotiations to conclude the civil war, and releasing Aung San Suu Kyi.
