$40 Million Bears Star Carted off Field With Potentially Serious Injury

The Chicago Bears invested $40 million in former Seattle Seahawks defensive back Coby Bryant this offseason to strengthen their secondary. Bryant, 27, was acquired to help replace the team's top three safeties, who have since moved on to other teams. However, just days into training camp, Bryant suffered a potential serious injury during the Bears' first full practice in pads on Monday.

Adam Hoge of CHGO reported that Bryant was carted off the field after grabbing his left knee during a one-on-one drill. Jason Lieser of the Chicago Sun-Times added that Bryant's emotional reaction to the injury raised concerns about the severity of the injury. Bryant had been projected as a team captain in his first season with the Bears, and his absence would be a significant blow to the defensive backfield.

The Bears' other projected starter is rookie first-round pick Dillon Thieneman, with Elijah Hicks as the only experienced safety on the roster. The team also has Anthony Johnson Jr., Gervarrius Owens, and rookie Skyler Thomas, but their combined experience in the NFL is limited.
