What Negeri Sembilan loss means for Malaysian PM Anwar’s political strategy

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's ruling coalition, Pakatan Harapan (PH), suffered a significant loss in the Negeri Sembilan state polls, raising concerns about his political strategy. The Barisan Nasional (BN) party, which is also an ally of PH at the federal level, secured 18 out of the 36 seats in Negeri Sembilan, giving them a supermajority of 25 with the help of the Perikatan Nasional (PN) party.

PH only managed 11 seats, marking a decline from their 17-seat victory in the last state election in 2023. The loss in Negeri Sembilan, coupled with a recent landslide victory in Johor, suggests that voters are increasingly judging political parties based on their delivery and broken promises rather than their ethno-nationalistic sentiment.

Analysts warn that this could reshape Malaysia's political landscape ahead of the next national election in February 2028. PH must now reconsider its efforts to appeal to conservative Malay voters and rebuild its reform narrative to win back voter trust. BN's growing electoral strength and consecutive wins in state polls indicate its increasing momentum, which could pressure PH to dissolve parliament early or maintain its mandate despite weakened control.
