In Miami two years prior to her death in 2010, fashion designer Sylvie Cachay was enjoying immense success with her swimwear line Syla. Renowned design publications like InStyle, Vogue, Lucky, and Elle lavished attention on her creations, and high-end retailers such as Barneys quickly snapped up her clothing. Fashion photographer Ben Baker, who was also Sylvie's fiancé, captured her signature style.

However, her world crumbled when the 2008 market crash made it difficult to secure additional funding for her business. Her engagement to photographer Ben ended as she focused on reviving her line. In the summer of 2010, Sylvie met Nicholas Brooks, a 24-year-old trust-fund heir. On their first date, they strolled Sylvie's beloved dogs, and Nicholas was present when her toy poodle, Pepper, was run over in the street.

Nicholas was by Sylvie's side throughout her darkest hours, providing comfort after the loss of her beloved pet. However, their relationship could not save Sylvie from her untimely demise in a luxurious New York City hotel room.
