Trump reaffirms US backing for Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara

United States President Donald J. Trump has reiterated the US's acknowledgment of Morocco's sovereignty over Western Sahara, stating it as the sole method to resolve the protracted territorial conflict. This reaffirmation was noted in a message to King Mohammed VI to celebrate Morocco's Throne Day, marking its 27th anniversary, according to a statement from the Moroccan Royal Office.

Trump declared, "The United States unequivocally recognizes Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara and supports Morocco’s serious, credible, and realistic autonomy proposal as the only basis for a just and lasting solution." He cautioned that any alternative strategy would only extend the dispute, asserting that the US remains committed to resolving it.

Trump also extended his congratulations to King Mohammed VI and the Moroccan people on Throne Day, emphasizing the deep-rooted friendship between the nations. "This year, we celebrate 250 years of American history and enduring friendship with Morocco — a bond forged in trust and mutual respect," he stated. Trump commended King Mohammed VI's leadership, describing it as a "stable anchor," and praised Morocco's contributions to peacekeeping, combating extremism, and fostering regional security.

The US President highlighted Morocco's role in advancing the Abraham Accords, reaffirming the US's ongoing collaboration with Morocco to bolster security cooperation in the Sahel, where political instability and extremist violence persist as significant concerns.

The message underscored the significance of expanding economic ties between the two countries, with Trump noting Morocco’s economic vision as a catalyst for new opportunities for shared prosperity. He directed his administration to promote economic and social development in partnership with Morocco, targeting sectors such as energy, artificial intelligence, critical minerals, and defense.
