1983 marked a significant milestone in the electronics industry as Samsung Electronics Co. announced it had become the world's third firm to develop 64K dynamic random access memory (DRAM), following companies in the United States and Japan.

In 2005, a research team from Seoul National University, led by Hwang Woo-suk, made headlines by cloning a dog, which was later verified through genetic testing. The cloned dog, an Afghan hound named Snuppy, garnered attention worldwide.

South Korean baseball manager Kim Euong-yong achieved a remarkable feat in 2013 by reaching his 1,500th victory in his career. This accomplishment was celebrated during a 4-2 win by the Hanwha Eagles over the NC Dinos.

In 2017, an internal probe by South Korea's National Intelligence Service revealed that the agency had operated up to 30 extra-departmental teams, many of which involved internet-savvy civilians. These teams were allegedly used for illicit political operations aimed at manipulating voters in the past.

In 2019, Japanese officials ordered the removal of a statue representing victims of Japan's World War II-era sexual slavery from the Aichi Triennale international contemporary art festival. The decision to remove the statue was made following a trade dispute between South Korea and Japan, which was triggered by Tokyo's tightening of key exports to Seoul. The dispute arose over compensation for Korean victims of wartime forced labor.

U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi made headlines in 2022 when she visited South Korea as part of her Asia swing. Her visit took on geopolitical overtones due to China's strong protests over Pelosi's high-stakes visit to Taiwan, which was deemed as interference in internal affairs by Beijing. Pelosi's itinerary included stops in Singapore, Malaysia, and Taiwan before her final visit to Japan.
