'Spider-Man: Brand New Day' chases 'Avengers: Endgame' opening record with $355 million domestic debut

Sony and Marvel's Spider-Man: Brand New Day debuted in the United States with an estimated box office haul of $355 million this weekend, just $2 million below the record-breaking opening of 2019's Avengers: Endgame. The film opened with a record-setting Thursday preview sales and earned $169.3 million on Friday, and $101.5 million on Saturday. Sony anticipates a final Sunday take of $84 million, bringing the total to $355 million. Final figures will be released on Monday.

Brand New Day is the second Hollywood film to generate more than $300 million in domestic ticket sales during its opening weekend, following Avengers: Endgame's $357 million debut seven years ago. Internationally, the movie grossed an additional $572 million, including $121 million from China, resulting in a global opening of $927 million.

Paul Dergarabedian, head of marketplace trends at Rentrak, remarked that this opening sets up an incredible August and boosts the probability of this summer becoming the biggest revenue-generating month since 2019, surpassing the $4 billion benchmark. An estimated 24.1 million moviegoers attended theaters in the U.S. and Canada to see Brand New Day. Around 21% of tickets sold were for premium large-format screenings, with an average price of $18.55 per ticket.

While Spider-Man: Brand New Day did not benefit from an IMAX release, other premium large-format options flourished over the weekend. Dolby Cinema achieved its highest domestic box office weekend ever, with $10 million in earnings from the film. Screen X and 4DX recorded $7 million and $5.2 million in ticket sales, respectively, both setting domestic records for their parent company, CJ4DPlex.

Kevin Feige, a producer on the film and president of Marvel Studios, expressed gratitude to audiences for their support in experiencing the movie as intended. He highlighted the enduring impact of Marvel's characters and the connection they maintain with fans worldwide. Feige also emphasized that this debut marks exciting things to come.
