Red-hot KT Wiz looking to extend lead atop KBO standings

The KT Wiz have been the dominant force in the South Korean baseball league, the KBO, this summer, thanks to their effective pitching and clutch hitting. Currently, the Wiz lead the KBO standings with a record of 59-36-2, a game ahead of the Samsung Lions. The LG Twins, who were at the top of the KBO at the beginning of July, have fallen behind by six games after losing two consecutive games over the weekend.

The Wiz kicked off their week with a game in Gwangju against the Kia Tigers, who have slipped from fourth to fifth place after winning only four of their past ten games. The Wiz will then host the Lotte Giants, who have recently snapped a three-game losing streak but still remain in eighth place, 8 1/2 games behind the lead.

Since the start of their six-game winning streak, the Wiz have maintained the KBO's best ERA of 2.00 and have scored the most runs in the league during this span with a total of 54, including 10 home runs led by rookie outfielder Sam Hilliard. Hilliard, playing in his first KBO season, had just five home runs in his first 28 games before May, but since then, he has hit the ball 24 times, the second-most in the league this period.

Hilliard is third in the league in home runs with 29, behind Kim Do-yeong of the Tigers and Austin Dean of the Lions.

The Lions have a six-game homestand ahead, three games against sixth-place Hanwha Eagles and three more against fourth-place Doosan Bears. However, the Lions may miss out on all six games this week due to a severe heatwave in Daegu and surrounding regions, which resulted in the cancellation of three games over the weekend. Weekday games usually begin at 6:30 p.m., but the KBO has announced the possibility of pushing back first-pitch times by up to one hour depending on the temperature.

Meanwhile, the Bears are set to begin their week hosting the NC Dinos in Seoul, aiming to close the gap between themselves and third-place rivals the Twins. The Bears currently sit just two games behind the Twins for the third-place position, while the Twins are just nine 1/2 games ahead of the Bears, having once trailed the latter by 9 1/2 games a month ago.

The Twins face the ninth-ranked SSG Landers in three consecutive games before playing the Tigers in three more games to conclude the week. With the season still in full swing, there is a significant gap between the top five teams and the rest, with the Tigers holding a comfortable 4 1/2-game lead over the Eagles for the final postseason spot.
