Protests over paper leaks: SC to hear on Monday pleas relating to police action

The Supreme Court of India is set to hear on Monday several petitions concerning police misconduct during recent demonstrations against exam irregularities and NEET paper leaks. A panel comprising Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V Mohana will consider the appeals, which include allegations of police brutality, pellet gun injuries, and attacks on law enforcement officials by students or outsiders.

On July 28, the court barred states from employing coercive tactics against protesters and ordered the release of individuals under 18 without criminal records. The court emphasized the need for a thorough, unbiased investigation into the violence, as well as the use of force by law enforcement. The bench also directed the preservation of digital evidence, such as CCTV footage and body-worn camera recordings, from the demonstrations.
