NPP to stage ‘Democracy Under Attack’ protest on August 6

The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) is set to organize a nationwide demonstration on August 6, 2026, titled "Democracy Under Attack". This protest aims to raise concerns about what the party perceives as escalating threats to Ghana's democratic governance. Scheduled to begin at 6:00 a.m. from the Supreme Court and conclude at Jubilee House, the event will see supporters mobilized under the hashtags #DemocracyUnderAttack, #SaveGhanaNow, and #SayNoToStateCapture.

NPP communications team member and spokesperson for former Vice-President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, expressed support for the demonstration. He highlighted what he claims are increasing attempts by the government to suppress dissent and weaken democratic institutions. Aboagye wrote on Facebook that despite power holders' temptation to stifle people's voices and rights, self-purge is an inherent aspect of democracy.

He pointed out several actions that he believes pose a real threat to democracy, such as the "rampant arrests of opposition voices," detention of TikTok users and media practitioners, weaponization of bail conditions, and the "romance between the Executive and the Judiciary".

Aboagye argued that democracy necessitates tolerating criticism from political opponents and called for equal treatment under the law. He urged authorities to cease what he described as selective justice. The planned protest is being organized amid heightened political tensions. The NPP maintains that the demonstration is intended to protect civil liberties, the rule of law, and democratic accountability.

However, the government has previously dismissed allegations of targeting political opponents, stating that law enforcement agencies and the judiciary operate independently and that arrests and prosecutions are conducted in accordance with the law.
