Mitch McConnell: Andy Beshear Takes Swipe at Republicans As Deadline Looms

If a Senate vacancy occurred with more than three months before an election, a special election would need to be called. However, the process is not straightforward, and the state's vacancy rules have not been fully tested in court.

Beshear noted that McConnell's absence from voting on important issues, such as the SAVE Act and potential Supreme Court justice replacement, could be beneficial. McConnell has not indicated he plans to resign, and his office continues to provide updates on his recovery. Republican reactions to McConnell's absence have varied, with some supporting him and others avoiding to comment on his ability to carry out duties. McConnell stepped down as Senate Republican leader in 2025 but remains Kentucky's senior senator.
