Hundreds gather at Harts Range for red dirt racing and rodeo

More than a thousand locals and visitors converged on the desert sands of Harts Range over the weekend for the 79th annual Harts Range Rodeo and Races. The event, held on Mount Riddock cattle station near the remote community of Atitjere, brings together ringers, pastoralists, and residents from across the Red Centre region.

In a year marked by both abundant rainfall and severe flooding, the gathering provided much-needed social interaction for many remote cattle stations. Jo Fogarty, a life member of Harts Range Races and a resident of Lucy Creek Station, expressed her appreciation for the event, stating that it's crucial for people to come together, especially after the floods of the previous year.

The weekend's festivities featured not only the thrilling rodeo events but also fashion on the field competitions, family activities, and a Saturday night bush dance. The rodeo drew both experienced competitors and newcomers to the region, such as Sydney-based Jacob Portelli, who expressed his desire to stay in the area after winning a trophy belt buckle.

In the horse racing, Jake Dallaglio emerged victorious in the feature Stockman's Cup, despite a disappointing start in the earlier races. His win provided a fitting conclusion to the weekend's events, leaving him with a memorable end to his time at Harts Range.
