Hank Green, the longtime YouTuber and science communicator, has apologized for relying too heavily on ChatGPT. In a lengthy Reddit response, Green admitted his use of AI had become unhealthy for both him and the world. The controversy began after a 55-minute episode of Complexly’s Ask Hank Anything, where viewers speculated that Green may have used ChatGPT to write or fact-check the segment.

Green confirmed that he used ChatGPT for preliminary research but denied using it to write or fact-check the video. Complexly, the educational media nonprofit founded by Green, clarified that his use of ChatGPT was uncommon for him and Complexly productions. Green plans to make fewer videos and pause two online word games after his admission.

He also expressed concerns about the impact of AI on his process and its broader implications, such as its potential climate impact and the consolidation of economic power by AI companies.
