Future track stars arrive in Eugene for World U20 meet. How to watch

The World Athletics U20 Championships is set to return to Eugene for its second appearance in 12 years, with approximately 1,800 athletes from 147 countries expected to compete from August 5-9. The meet will break the previous record of 1,558 competitors set at the 2024 edition in Lima, Peru.

Among the highly anticipated competitors are American track athletes Juan Gonzalez (men’s 5,000 meters) and Jaslene Massey (women’s discus and shot put), Estonian heptathlete Mia Uusorg, and others such as Jamaican sprinter Gary Card, who currently holds the world U20 record in the 100 meters with a time of 9.93 seconds, and Ethiopian distance star Haregeweyni Kalayu, who is the only runner under 4 minutes in the women’s 1,500.

The event holds a special significance as many young athletes who participated in the 2014 U20 championships at Hayward Field went on to achieve great success on the world stage, including American discus star Valerie Sion, Jamaican sprinter Trayvon Bromell, and Ethiopian distance specialist Yomif Kejelcha.
