Full AfCFTA implementation will transform Africa – Dr Ishmael Yamson

MTN Ghana Board Chairman, Dr Ishmael Yamson, has emphasized the transformative potential of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) in reshaping the continent's future. In a recent interview on The Y’ello Chair – Episode 8, Dr Yamson stressed that the agreement is a significant milestone for Africa, but its success hinges on the commitment of member states to fully implement the agreement.

He highlighted that the full implementation of AfCFTA could not only facilitate trade but also encourage the free movement of capital, resources, and people across Africa. Dr Yamson proposed the establishment of an immigration policy akin to the European Union's, which would allow for easier legal movement and work opportunities for people across the continent.

He urged African countries to prioritize shared interests over historical divisions, stressing that economic integration could help the region focus on common goals and create larger markets for sustainable growth. Dr Yamson envisions an Africa where people can move freely across borders, and governments are managed professionally, arguing that the region's young population of nearly 70 percent under the age of 30 offers a unique opportunity to transform the demographic advantage into sustained economic growth.

He concluded by calling for collaboration between governments and the private sector to achieve this vision, stating that together, Africa can become a continent of opportunity for future generations.
