French wildfire near Bordeaux contained as 1,500 firefighters battle separate blaze in Provence

France's monumental wildfire near Bordeaux, which engulfed an area four times the size of Paris and forced 224,000 residents to evacuate, remains contained as of Sunday but continues to burn. Concurrently, a newer fire in Provence has halted its advance overnight yet remains uncontained. Approximately 3,000 firefighters are currently engaged on both fronts, working to snuff out hot spots, carve firebreaks, and safeguard scorched forests amid high temperatures and gusty winds capable of reigniting smoldering embers.

The Gironde region's fire devoured about 420 square kilometers (162 square miles) within a span of ten days before officials declared its advance halted over the weekend. The prefecture clarified that while the fire is now "fixed," it does not signify complete extinguishment. Residents of the region continue to operate under France's highest red forest-fire alert, prompted by dry conditions and soaring temperatures, as well as afternoon winds that could spark new flames.

Further reinforcements from Ukraine, Lithuania, and French Polynesia are slated to arrive on Sunday and Monday to bolster efforts.

Research conducted by scientists at World Weather Attribution indicated that human-induced climate change had doubled the likelihood of extreme fire conditions in France. This finding emerged while the flames were still smoldering. Europe stands as the world's most rapidly warming continent, experiencing temperature increases at twice the global average since the 1980s, according to the European Union's Copernicus Climate Change Service.

The Gironde fire sparked one of the largest peacetime evacuations in modern French history, displacing thousands of individuals or rendering their homes inaccessible. In the southeastern Var department, around 1,500 firefighters combated a separate blaze that ravaged roughly 18 square kilometers (seven square miles) in less than a day.
