Finucane creates Games history with fourth gold

Wales' Emma Finucane has etched her name in sporting history by claiming four track gold medals at the same Commonwealth Games, a feat never before accomplished by a sprint cyclist. The 23-year-old athlete has now added the keirin victory to her previous triumphs in the individual and team sprints, as well as the 1,000m time trial. Olympic champion Ellesse Andrews secured the second spot in the Commonwealth keirin title defence.

Finucane's remarkable achievements took place over four consecutive days at the Chris Hoy Velodrome in Glasgow. The Welsh star has outdone New Zealand's Aaron Gate, who achieved the same feat in 2022, winning four golds with three on the track and one in the road race.

Australian legend Anna Meares and New Zealander Ellesse Andrews had previously won three track titles in previous games. Finucane has now become the first Welsh female athlete to secure four golds in a single Commonwealth Games, surpassing the previous record held by weightlifter David Morgan. The 31-year-old Welshman holds the record with nine golds and three silver in his Commonwealth Games career.

Finucane contributed to Wales' total of 31 medals at the Games, with nine gold, 10 silver, and 12 bronze to her name. The Carmarthen star has also been honored with the distinction of leading Team Wales in the closing ceremony tonight.
