Ex-champion jockey Crowley retires 10 months after fall

Former champion jockey Jim Crowley announced his retirement 10 months after sustaining serious injuries in a fall. The 48-year-old jockey sustained his injuries at York in September when his horse, Almeraq, was brought down after clipping heels with a rival and then rolled over Crowley. Crowley was taken to Leeds General Infirmary and has undergone multiple operations on his pelvis and legs.

Despite a successful career, Crowley stated that his body could not return to the level he desired to race again. He expressed his happiness at making the announcement at Goodwood, his home track, where he had many memorable days. Crowley, who secured 29 Group One wins, began his career as a National Hunt jockey before transitioning to the Flat.

He became champion jockey in 2016 and was appointed as the retained rider for Hamdan Al Maktoum's Shadwell Stud. Crowley plans to remain in the sport and expressed his desire to pursue a trainer's career, hoping to achieve a similar level of success.
