CUHK earmarks Pak Shek Kok site for new medical building and 10th college

The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) has announced plans to construct a new medical building and its 10th college on the Pak Shek Kok site, near the city's technology hub. This move aims to enhance the university's research capabilities and align with government efforts to improve transport connectivity in the area. CUHK President Dennis Lo Yuk-ming highlighted the challenge of high housing costs in Hong Kong's scientific research sector and pledged to address this by providing more hostel facilities and accommodation for talented individuals in the future.

The new medical building and college will be built on the 39 Area site, adjacent to the future Pak Shek Kok MTR station. Lo indicated that the university has ample space to expand on this site. Pak Shek Kok MTR station, on the East Rail line, is expected to open by 2033 or earlier, further boosting connectivity with the Hong Kong Science and Technology Park.

The rail project, funded by allowing the rail company to build and sell private flats near the station, also includes a footbridge spanning the Tolo Highway, connecting the station with Chong San Road near the science park. Lo noted that CUHK had risen to 18th place in the latest QS World University Rankings 2027, attributing this achievement to the institution's strong global profile.

The university has recruited more than half of its professors from outside Hong Kong, contributing to an exceptionally high score in the international faculty category. CUHK has also improved its reputation among employers, reflecting its success in building a stronger international profile.
