Assam floods: 82 dead, 1.78 lakh affected as relief efforts intensify - key points

Assam continues to recover from severe flooding on Sunday, with 82 fatalities and nearly 1.78 lakh individuals impacted across seven districts. While floodwaters are receding, thousands remain displaced, fields submerged, and the state government is ramping up relief, rehabilitation, and long-term measures.

According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), the situation has slightly improved, with affected numbers dropping from over 1.92 lakh to 1.78 lakh. However, 349 villages in Golaghat, Sivasagar, Charaideo, Jorhat, Bajali, Dhemaji, and Sonitpur districts remain affected. Charaideo is the most severely impacted, with over 75,000 people affected, followed by Sivasagar with more than 58,000.

Relief and rescue operations are ongoing, with 44 shelters accommodating around 15,000 displaced people and 17 distribution centers aiding over 5,500 residents. The state government has instructed districts to swiftly identify affected families for financial aid to start on August 3.

Rescue efforts shone through the Nepali Khuti area of Sivasagar, where villagers utilized six homemade boats to save over 1,000 people from five villages after floodwaters rapidly rose on July 19. Despite limited resources, volunteers continued operations overnight, transporting stranded villagers to safety.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma toured the worst-hit districts on Sunday to oversee relief operations and plan a comprehensive damage assessment starting August 9. Additionally, the government directed officials to ensure continuous relief distribution, assess damage to educational institutions prior to the reopening on August 10, and plan the restoration of damaged Namghars (Vaishnavite prayer centers).

To address the Brahmaputra river's erosion, Sarma announced that IIT-Guwahati will collaborate on developing a long-term solution, emphasizing that Assam loses valuable land annually due to this issue. The state will incur Rs 90 crore for a planned erosion mitigation project, complemented by the new IIT initiative.

Agriculture rehabilitation commenced with Agriculture Minister Pijush Hazarika visiting Charaideo to assess post-flood measures and introduce community paddy nurseries and seedling distribution programs for affected farmers. Quality seedlings and other support will be provided to resume cultivation promptly during the current agricultural season.

Support for flood-affected communities has grown, with actor Randeep Hooda joining a relief drive organized by Global Sikhs in Sivasagar, distributing supplies and providing meals through langar for affected families. He cautioned about potential disease outbreaks from prolonged waterlogging and advised people nationwide to contribute to relief efforts.

The Lok Janshakti Party (Ramvilas) launched a large-scale relief operation in Sivasagar, distributing food and essentials, planning to feed up to 15,000 people daily for ten days, and setting up medical camps.

The central government allocated Rs 379.35 crore under the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) for Assam's flood response, thanking Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah for assistance and deploying Inter-Ministerial Central Teams to aid in relief and rehabilitation planning. Reliance Foundation also contributed Rs 21 crore to the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund.
