Autonomous Key is a $9 NFC key designed to help users control their screen time by physically locking distracting apps on their smartphones. Unlike traditional screen-time apps, this device requires users to scan the key with their phone to regain access, instead of relying on self-control through notifications or timers. The key is compact, measuring around 3 inches long, and is compatible with Android 8.0 or newer and iOS 15 or newer devices.

Its companion app offers AI-powered insights into users' app usage habits, such as how often and for how long they unlock distracting apps, and suggests convenient spots to store the key to enhance its effectiveness. Unlike many other app blockers, Autonomous Key does not require a subscription or premium features, and can be paired with multiple phones, making it a versatile option for individuals and families.

However, during testing, the NFC scan occasionally required multiple attempts to register, which may hinder its use for important apps like messaging or email. The company is currently in beta and shipping keys following a Kickstarter campaign, offering the device in five colors: pink, orange, blue, gray, and brown.
