Pegula sets up Washington Open final against Eala

On Saturday, 21-year-old Filipino tennis player Alexandra Eala stunned third-seeded Naomi Osaka in the Mubadala DC Open final. The match lasted 76 minutes, but Eala ultimately triumphed 6-4, 6-2. The players traded early breaks, but Eala made her move by taking the opening set at 4-4. She capitalized on this momentum in the second set, leading 2-0 and adding another break for a 5-2 advantage. Eala secured the victory, marking a significant achievement in her breakthrough season.

In the other final, top-seeded Jessica Pegula faced fourth-seeded Russian Diana Shnaider. Pegula overcame a slow start to defeat Shnaider 7-5, 6-4. Shnaider led 5-2 in the first set, but Pegula gained a 5-2 lead in the second set by winning 10 consecutive games. Shnaider managed to break Pegula's serve once, but Pegula ultimately closed out the match two games later.

This victory positions Pegula for her third title of the season, her 12th overall, and her second in Washington after securing her first tour trophy there in 2019. Pegula had previously defeated Eala at the 2025 Miami Open semi-finals.

Elsewhere, 16-year-old qualifier Kristina Liutova extended her historic run by defeating sixth-seeded Caty McNally 7-5, 6-1 to reach the final of the Memphis Classic. Liutova, born in the 2010s, became the first player in the WTA Tour main draw to reach a final and the youngest finalist since Coco Gauff in 2019. Her impressive run includes victories over top-seeded Ekaterina Alexandrova, Maya Joint of Australia, and sixth-seeded Caty McNally.

Liutova will face another first-time finalist, 23-year-old Czech Darja Vidmanova, who defeated Mexican Renata Zarazua 6-3, 6-3, showcasing strong performance with five aces, winning 76.5 percent of her first-serve points, and saving five of her six break points.
