NXP reportedly in talks to acquire vehicle chip supplier Ambarella

NXP Semiconductors is reportedly in discussions to acquire Ambarella, a leading provider of vehicle chips. The Financial Times has cited unnamed sources, suggesting that other companies may also be interested in making a bid. Ambarella's market value has surged by 16% following the rumors, which would likely increase further if the acquisition were to take place.

NXP is one of the world's largest suppliers of car chips, with a presence in various segments such as infotainment devices, autonomous driving systems, and data centers. Ambarella, based in Santa Clara, California, competes with NXP in the automotive sector by manufacturing chips that empower cars to incorporate artificial intelligence software.

The company recently unveiled its latest auto chip, the CV7, which integrates a four-core central processing unit, an image signal processor, and a video encoder. The CV7's innovations include an artificial intelligence accelerator and a video encoder designed to compress footage into a memory-efficient format. Moreover, the chip is equipped with an AI accelerator that reportedly offers five times superior power-efficiency compared to rival designs, enabling it to run transformer-based language models.

This technology allows the CV7 to support vehicles' advanced driver assistance systems, facilitating features such as automated parking and lane centering. The CV7 is part of Ambarella's range of products that also includes the CV3-AD685, a more advanced processor capable of enabling Level 4 autonomy, or the ability for a vehicle to operate without any human intervention in most situations.

The CV3-AD685 includes a specialized processing module known as a safety island, which optimizes the execution of critical car code. Ambarella's chips have already found applications in over a half-dozen segments, including the industrial robot market, further enhancing NXP's potential to expand its footprint in the autonomous vehicle industry.
