Mother and daughter laid to rest after Cavan crash

A mother and her 10-year-old daughter have been laid to rest following a crash in Cavan. Nell Saffron Raven and her daughter Irena Raven Mereacre passed away in a collision on the R162 road at Corclare, Shercock, on July 24th. Ms Raven, who had recently become an Irish citizen, died at the scene, while Irena was airlifted to Temple Street Children's Hospital in Dublin and also succumbed to her injuries on Tuesday afternoon.

Irena, known as Ira, was remembered as a bright and creative child who inherited her artistic talents from her journalist and author mother. Fr Sean McDermott highlighted Irena's achievements, including appearing on RTÉ’s Late Late Toy Show the previous Christmas. The family donated Irena's organs, which saved four other children's lives.

Ms Raven, born in Wales in 1973, met her first husband while both worked as journalists in London. The couple married in Oxford in 2014 and moved to Ireland in 2019, settling into a renovated cottage in Milltown. Irena's father, Alexandru Mereacre, shared his 13-year love story with his wife, who was a novelist, journalist, and author.

Fr McDermott emphasized Irena's kindness and the family's fond memories, while expressing his struggle to find meaning in their tragic deaths.
