Michigan Reports Hacks on Water Systems Amid FBI Probe

Michigan has reported cyberattacks on its water systems, joining Minnesota in announcing the incidents, which intelligence officials have blamed on Iran. Federal agencies have stated that at least seven states' water systems were compromised, though they did not name the states. No damage or injuries were reported. Minnesota authorities reported earlier this week that at least 30 of the state's water systems were targeted in a cyberattack.

The FBI and the Environmental Protection Agency announced on Thursday that the attackers targeted systems to remotely monitor and control equipment, including remote access equipment. Dale George, a spokesman for Michigan's Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy, said that Michigan communities reported activity consistent with what federal agencies described, but all systems continued to operate safely, and issues were addressed by local operators.

There are no known impacts that posed a public health concern. The FBI stated that it is "fully engaged to protect critical infrastructure" and declined to comment on the specific attacks. President Trump blamed the attacks on Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, with whom he has had tense relations, and accused Walz of being "grossly incompetent" and "corrupt."
