McAidoo 'the kind of winger I love' - Maresca

Enzo Maresca's debut as Manchester City's manager concluded in a penalty-shootout defeat to Inter Milan, but pre-season friendlies like this one hold greater significance than mere results. Teenager Ryan McAidoo, who was signed from Chelsea two years ago, seized the opportunity to showcase his talents at the Kai Tak Stadium in Hong Kong, drawing more than 40,000 supporters. While it was a non-competitive fixture, the young winger's performance left a lasting impression on the crowd.

At just 18 years old, McAidoo was given his debut by former City boss Pep Guardiola and scored in the 10-1 FA Cup match against Exeter City in the previous season. He also played against Salford in the following round, displaying his aggressive one-on-one skills and decision-making abilities. Maresca, impressed by McAidoo's performance, stated, "We have been speaking with the club about Ryan and since day one he is that kind of winger I love. Very aggressive one v one, always trying, making the right decision."

Although young, McAidoo understands the importance of progressing through the ranks. "He needs the right path," Maresca acknowledged. As for the other City players who made an impact, McAidoo replaced Divin Mubama at the start of the second half and continued to make his presence felt. He nearly scored a match-winning goal when his shot hit the post, and another drifted just wide.

The young winger's constant forward movement and positive attitude have caught the attention of many, including BBC Sport's live text page contributor, who compared McAidoo to Foden, O'Reilly, and Palmer.

Regarding McAidoo's future, Maresca hinted at the possibility of him being given a chance in cup games or even a loan move away. "At the moment, with most of the young players, the idea was to see them in pre-season and then decide," the Italian manager said. "We started 10 days ago. Ryan is working well, he just has to continue then we will take the right decision.

I am always very open with the young players. When I was at Leicester, that season there was a record number of debutants. When I was at Chelsea, record debutants from the academy. If they are good, there is no problem."
