Egypt wins chairmanship of AI governance, quantum computing working groups at Arab AI Committee

Egypt emerged victorious on July 31, 2026, securing the chairmanship of two vital working groups under the Arab Permanent Committee for AI and Emerging Technologies, an affiliate of the Arab Ministers of Council for Communications and Information. This achievement underscores Arab confidence in Egypt's expanding role in future technologies.

The committee aims to bolster Arab integration in AI and emerging technologies, foster digital transformation, and establish a unified Arab stance in global forums. The election took place during the committee's inaugural meeting in Tunisia, where representatives from Arab states and regional/international observers gathered. Established following a resolution from the Council of Arab Ministers of Communication and Information, the body is charged with formulating regional AI policies, promoting digital transformation, building human capacity, sharing expertise, monitoring tech advancements, and periodically reviewing recommendations.

It also drafts strategic frameworks for modern technology adoption, proposes regional/international agreements, sets up specialized working groups, and coordinates Arab states' involvement in international arenas. The committee consists of six working groups, each chaired by a member state. Egypt previously presided over the committee's founding meeting at the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology headquarters in May.

The AI Governance Working Group develops an AI governance framework, technical tools, and mechanisms for implementing the Arab Charter on AI Ethics. Meanwhile, the Quantum Computing Working Group drafts an Arab strategy for quantum computing, explores applications, monitors global research, and examines quantum cybersecurity deployment.
