Why is it difficult to contain the growing Ebola outbreak in DRC? | Explained

The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has taken a grim turn, with the death toll crossing 1,500 as of July 28, 2026, according to data from the country's Ministry of Health. The outbreak, which began in May 2026, has seen 3,442 confirmed cases, with 1,521 resulting in fatalities. Almost 797 individuals are currently hospitalized or in isolation as health officials struggle to contain the epidemic.

Ebola, a virus belonging to the orthoebolaviruses family, was first identified in 1976 in South Sudan and Congo. The disease is transmitted to humans through contact with infected animal fluids or secretions, and can spread from person to person via blood or bodily fluids. Symptoms include fever, fatigue, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain, with a 2-21 day incubation period.

The current outbreak is caused by the rare Bundibugyo strain, which has no approved vaccines or specific treatments. The spread of the disease has been fueled by a lack of vaccines and treatments, insecurity caused by rebel conflict, inadequate health facilities and infrastructure, and community distrust. The lack of a vaccine, coupled with community distrust, has also hindered contact tracing efforts, with the current contact tracing rate at 78.3%.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared the outbreak a public health emergency of international concern, and has launched a $518 million joint plan to combat the epidemic. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has pledged $107 million in support, while India has dispatched emergency pharmaceutical supplies.

Uganda, which shares a border with DRC, remains Ebola-free, but remains on high alert. Scientists at Oxford University are developing a vaccine, while other teams worldwide are also working on potential treatments.
