When Corporate Culture Works: In Memory of Derk Sauer

Exactly one year ago, Derk Sauer, the founder of The Moscow Times, passed away in an unexpected accident. Despite his untimely death, The Moscow Times has continued to thrive. Derk remained actively involved until his final day, having no plans to retire. His death seemed to signal the end of the publication, given its unique position in Russia. However, The Moscow Times has expanded its audiences and launched new projects, showing resilience.

The publication's success is attributed to Derk's corporate culture, characterized by clear decision-making, transparency, and employee protection. This culture fostered honesty and professionalism, creating an environment where employees were motivated and content. The author, who has worked at The Moscow Times for over two decades, credits this culture for their continued growth and stability.

The decision to move The Moscow Times from Moscow to Amsterdam was not merely pragmatic but also aimed at preserving the brand and enabling journalists to continue their work. Derk Sauer's company, Independent Media, was among the first in Russia to establish a corporate philanthropy department, reflecting his commitment to helping others. In his memory, the inaugural Derk Sauer Lecture for Independent Journalism was established in Amsterdam.

Despite facing challenges, including being labeled as an undesirable organization and being subjected to criminalization, The Moscow Times continues to provide unbiased, accurate reporting on Russia.
