Trump Administration Amps Up Pressure On Senate To Confirm Todd Blanche As Attorney General

The Trump Administration is applying greater pressure on the Senate to confirm Todd Blanche as Attorney General, as the legislative body prepares to recess for August. Blanche currently serves as the acting Attorney General, appointed by the administration in July. The White House released a statement on Friday, urging the Senate to "confirm Todd Blanche without delay," citing support from various law enforcement organizations, state attorneys general, and former Justice Department officials.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio also urged the Senate to confirm Blanche before their August recess, praising his contributions to advancing President Trump's agenda and enhancing public safety. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins echoed the call for confirmation, stating that President Trump has selected the appropriate leader for the Department of Justice (DOJ).

However, the confirmation process has been complicated by concerns over the elimination of the proposed $1.8 billion "Anti-Weaponization Fund" from the Senate Judiciary Committee's vote on Blanche's nomination. Two Republican senators, including John Cornyn, have expressed their reluctance to support Blanche until written confirmation is received regarding the fund's absence.

Despite losing his re-election in the Republican primary, Cornyn maintains his opposition to the fund's elimination, arguing that ordinary citizens should not receive preferential treatment in government settlements. Trump hinted on Thursday that he might withdraw Blanche's nomination if the Senate fails to confirm him promptly, particularly due to Cornyn and Senator Tom Tillis.

During a Cabinet meeting on Friday, Trump stated that he does not blame Cornyn for his opposition, acknowledging that he endorsed Blanche's opponent who defeated Cornyn.
