Sony’s Plan to Kill Physical PlayStation Discs Faces Gamer Backlash

Sony's strategy to eliminate physical PlayStation discs comes under scrutiny as gamers express discontent. Despite this push, Sony plans to remove disc sales by January 2028, with all upcoming titles available digitally. This shift is driven by consumer preferences for digital media, though some gamers are protesting with calls for a worldwide boycott, urging them to keep their systems off until August 23.

A petition on Change.org has garnered over 350,000 signatures, requesting Sony to reconsider its decision. Sony's CFO, Lin Tao, maintains that the company remains committed to its plan, stating that the backlash won't impact sales significantly. She acknowledges the emotional attachment players have to physical games but suggests future measures to mitigate the impact, though specifics are undisclosed.

The PS5 Slim Disc is the sole model with a built-in disc drive, while the PS5 Digital Edition and PS5 Pro require a separate disc drive. Unless the boycott significantly impacts Sony's revenue, they're unlikely to alter their stance. The decision also affects resale platforms like GameStop and eBay, as digital sales solely control the company.

While PC gamers have transitioned to digital storefronts, Xbox's next console, Project Helix, won't have a disc drive, potentially leaving Nintendo as the last physical game supporter.
