Russian missile that crashed in Poland carried “significant amount” of explosive material

A Russian Kh-101 cruise missile carrying a significant amount of explosive material crashed in eastern Poland overnight, violating the country's airspace, according to Polish authorities. The missile entered Poland during a period of intense Russian attacks on Ukraine and traveled approximately 100 kilometers over Polish territory before exploding in a field in the Lublin region.

Deputy Defense Minister Cezary Tomczyk confirmed that the object was a Russian Kh-101 missile, capable of carrying even nuclear warheads. Tomczyk expressed uncertainty about whether the incident was a deliberate move by Moscow, stating that all possibilities would be ruled out through intelligence. Poland is working closely with Ukraine, noting that 20 of the 70 missiles fired by Russia overnight were initially heading towards Poland.

However, Ukraine successfully intercepted the majority of them over Ukrainian territory. An investigation found the missile contained a "significant amount of explosive material," with investigators collecting fragments and soil samples from the impact site. The crater left by the explosion measured around 10 meters in diameter and 5 meters in depth.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk commented on the incident, stating that the government would consider providing Ukraine with further military aid, including additional Patriot air-defense systems if necessary. US Ambassador to Poland Thomas Rose emphasized that any breach of a NATO ally's territory is taken extremely seriously and pledged coordination with Polish authorities as the investigation proceeds.
