How to keep your AI conversations as private as possible

Worried about your personal AI chats being exposed? Here's how to tighten your privacy across several of the major chatbots.

The privacy of conversations with AI chatbots has come under scrutiny. A recent issue with Anthropic's Claude AI allows access to conversations through a Google search exploit. While Anthropic quickly fixed the problem, concerns about AI conversation privacy remain. This article examines how to secure your AI conversations by looking at privacy settings for four major AI chatbots: ChatGPT, Gemini, ChatGPT, and Gemini.

To use ChatGPT without saving conversations, chat without an account or log out before submitting a query. Temporary chats are available, which are not saved to your history. OpenAI uses conversations to train its model, but you can turn off this feature in ChatGPT settings. If sensitive information is shared, delete the chat by clicking the ellipsis icon and selecting Delete.

Gemini offers temporary chats that remain in the chat history for 72 hours and are not used for training or personalization. To enable temporary chats, click the Temporary chat button in the left sidebar. Google uses Gemini conversations to train AI, but you can turn off this activity in the Gemini Apps Activity page to prevent AI training and avoid chat history access.

Remove specific activity by clicking the X button next to it. Public links for Gemini chats can also be removed from the Your public links section in settings.
