Gemini will create mobile & desktop apps in the future as AI Studio for Android, iOS is canceled

At Google I/O 2026, the tech giant announced a change in plans for its AI Studio app on Android and iOS, canceling the mobile application in favor of a deep integration with the Gemini app. The AI Studio app was designed to allow users to "capture an idea on the go and have a working prototype ready by the time they get to their desk," providing an alternative to using aistudio.google.com on a mobile browser.

The AI Studio team revealed that over 800,000 users had pre-ordered the app on Google Play and the App Store, signaling "people are interested in building software on the go." However, Google decided to take a different approach, partnering with the Gemini app team to make apps emerge naturally during everyday conversations with Gemini on mobile and desktop.

Work on the AI Studio website will continue for those who prefer this method. In terms of availability, the teams are working diligently on bringing this new approach to life, with more updates to share in the future. While a dedicated mobile experience for AI Studio would have been ideal, the existing Progressive Web App (PWA) works well today.
