White Australia's ‘unprecedented act of racism'?

In October 2023, Australian voters rejected proposals for an Indigenous Voice to Parliament, a move that marked the second consecutive defeat for such a body. Despite this setback, Victoria state took a significant step forward by formally signing a treaty with its First Peoples. At the southern edge of Alice Springs, the Heavitree Gap, a narrow mountain chain stretching 650km, holds immense cultural significance in Arrernte culture.

This place, associated with the heroes of the Dreaming, is where the world began according to traditional beliefs.

Brian Youngy, a traditional leader, recounted a story from their heritage: the green caterpillar and the brown caterpillar turned to stone when they witnessed their father's beheading. He emphasized that this sacred site has been a meeting place for Aboriginal peoples for countless generations, dating back over 60,000 years – the oldest continuous living culture on Earth.

Youngy lamented the colonial perspective, stating that white Australians see a barren desert where Aboriginal peoples perceive an abundance of resources, deciphering the sand as a narrative through their songlines.

Anthropologist William Stanner described the profound bond between Aboriginal peoples and their homeland, transcending mere geography. For Aboriginal people, their land is not just a camp, heart, or country; it is an eternal home, a source of life, and a spiritual center. Youngy, a social worker of Gamilaroi heritage, echoed this sentiment, asserting that Aboriginal peoples never fought territorial wars.

He emphasized that conquering the land of another's ancestors would be meaningless, as their connection to the land is intrinsic and unbreakable.
