Smallest.ai raises $13M to accelerate the development of its asynchronous voice AI architecture

Smallest.ai, a voice AI startup, has secured a $13 million Series A investment to accelerate its development. The funding, led by Seligman Ventures and joined by Sierra Ventures and 3one4 Capital, follows an $8 million seed round in October. This brings the total funding raised to over $21 million.

The company unveiled Hydra, an asynchronous speech-to-speech model, based on its advanced "Voice 4.0" architecture. This innovative architecture is designed to make AI conversations more natural, responsive, and scalable.

The voice AI market is currently valued at $2.4 billion annually, but it's expected to grow to over $47.5 billion by 2034. Currently, AI accounts for less than 1% of global voice interactions due to limitations in existing systems. Smallest.ai argues these systems struggle with complexity, resulting in robotic voices and high latency, limiting their usefulness.

The startup's solution, Hydra, is the core of its Voice 4.0 architecture. It allows for parallel processing of listening, reasoning, actions, and responses, enabling real-time conversational flows, natural interruptions, and mid-conversation tool use.

Smallest.ai has also developed speech-to-text models like Pulse STT Pro and Lightning V3.1, which rank among the highest voice AI systems. These models enable rapid transcription with latency measured in milliseconds.

The funding will help Smallest.ai to expand its technology stack and compete in the growing voice AI market. While rivals like Fish Audio and ElevenLabs have raised significant funds, Smallest.ai's unique approach to rethinking voice AI architecture offers potential for success.
