Just over 400 U.S. patents contain citations to retracted scientific papers

A recent study has uncovered that roughly 400 U.S. patents cite retracted scientific papers, despite the system's intended function as a repository of cutting-edge information. Researchers analyzed over 13 million patents and found that 401 patents – of the nearly 136,000 that contained citations to scientific papers – included references to retracted papers.

This revelation comes as experts argue that patent offices and information platforms need to enhance their infrastructure to easily identify and handle such retracted papers. Hana Kim, the lead researcher from the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, suggests that patent systems should be linked with metadata from databases like Retraction Watch to facilitate this process.

However, there is no formal mechanism for retracting patents in the U.S., and while a certificate of correction can be appended, it doesn't alter the original patent text. Experts agree that the patent office's failure to address retractions is an embarrassment, as the primary purpose of patents is to disseminate scientific information.
