Digital bike ID startup Bikekey secures TÖNNJES investment

Denmark-based digital bike registry firm Bikekey has secured a strategic investment from German company TÖNNJES, aiming to expand digital bike registration globally. With the increasing number of bicycles and e-bikes, the demand for theft protection and proof of ownership has surged, benefiting private users, cities, insurers, manufacturers, and retailers.

TÖNNJES, a global provider of vehicle registration systems, including tamper-proof plates and digital identification solutions, sees potential in this new micromobility market driven by urbanization and climate action. In Scandinavia, Bikekey collaborates with major insurers, manufacturers, retailers, and cycling associations, having already registered over 100,000 bikes in Denmark and Norway.

TÖNNJES's partnership with Bikekey brings decades of trust and authority in vehicle identification worldwide, enabling the company to enter new markets through TÖNNJES’s extensive relationships with governments and public bodies in over 100 countries. Bikekey's CEO, René Nørgård, highlights the success of the system in Denmark, where nearly all stolen bikes are returned after implementation.

TÖNNJES managing director, Jörn Bertram, emphasizes that Bikekey's proven concept in Scandinavia will bring security standards to new markets with TÖNNJES's global network.
